[BIG SNIP] frankly, I don't see anything that might indicate that it's recognised. All I'm seeing in the dmesg is your 1394 device is 'sort-of' detected but it's not assigned a partition. What does cat /proc/partition states? if 1394 is anything like USB, can you do a tail -f /var/log/messages and then plug the HDD into the slot and email back on the output.
