The not active but preset path to the cert(s) is

define(`confCACERT_PATH',`/usr/share/ssl/certs')

in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc. If you choose a different location then adjust
the path setting. And of course you have to create the cert(s). From the
error above no cert.pem exists, at least in /etc/mail/certs.
