Generally, there is a alias in your /etc/modprobe.conf (or modules.conf on prior releases) that points eth0 to the kernel module (driver) for your specific network card. Here is example:
alias eth0 e100
This is for an Intel based card. /dev/eth0 is using the e100 kernel module.
Brian - here is my modprobe.conf file
/etc/modprobe.conf
alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx
install snd-via82xx { /usr/sbin/alsact1 store /dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-via82xx
alias usb-controller uhci-hcd
alias eth0 ne
As you ca see it refers to the ne module. Where do i find that and how do i install it?
