My guess is that you did su to become root.  Either login as root (on a
VC) or use "su -"; otherwise root's dot files are not executed and you
will still have the user's environment that does not have /sbin and
/usr/sbin on the path.

Thanks for that tip - I had no idea that when I SU'd I did not become a real root user. There has to be basic tutorial that will give neophytes like me a few clues to get started in Linux

I just spent 1 hour trying to figure out how to make my w98 partitions visible to FC2. Once I sorted out the syntax in the fstab they now show up in /mnt - now if there was a way to make them visble on the desktop I would be happy
