Thanks for the advice.
But when you say "stop and restart the X-server"
do you mean stop and restart X, eg in my case the process

/usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -audit 0 -auth /var/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7

How exactly do I restart this?

Or do you mean stop and restart the processes
