VMware 4.5 will run FC2. Look carefully at /var/log/Xorg.0.log. If you are running into the same problem I have. Then you will find your default color depth setting is wrong.
Mine was set to 16 bpp and needed to be set to 24 bpp in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Once I fixed those 2 lines, X came right up.
