Install bootstrap hangs

I have an older machine, but one that is within the minima in the release notes.

I managed to get the installer boostrapped via a diskette boot which turned into a CD boot, entered:
linux text

The system then displayed
  Installing the 7aicxxxx
(not sure what the precise spelling is)

After about 30 minutes of blue screen with the buttons menu on the bottom, I get

Running anaconda, the Fedora Core system installer - please wait ...

which remained on the screen unchanged for about an hour and I simply gave up.

Computer details:
  Dell Workstation 400 MT
  Pentium II, 300 mhz
  40g ATA hard drive
  floppy, cdrom reader
  ethernet card

Even though the system cannot bootstrap from CDROM, I used a BootManager http://btmgr.sourceforge.net/.

I had similar problems with the FC1 load, but resolved it by using the two diskettes (boot and drivers), and loading from the network.

Does anyone have any ideas?
