I have searched high and low for a way to get the cisco vpn linux
version 4.0.3.Bk9 client to work with a 2.6.5 kernel.

There is a newer Cisco VPN Client, version 4.0.4, that was released earlier this month. It claims support for 2.6 kernels. You can get it from Cisco's website, which requires registration. http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/secursw/ps2276/index.html is a quick-reference to the downloads area on Cisco's site.
