Are you setting the volume level for the oss driver or the alsa driver? It works for me. The volume issues were on the oss driver side. I have done Preferences > Sound cranked up everything Alsamixer and cranked everything up in there as well. Also, I have clicked on the speaker icon in the tool bar and chosen Volume, PCM, Speaker made sure that those were turned up as well.
