I have searched high and low for a way to get the cisco vpn linux
version 4.0.3.Bk9 client to work with a 2.6.5 kernel.

I have tried the deadlock patch from www.anomalistic.org but it
doesn't work for me.

It worked great using a 2.4 kernel.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

One thing which I would recommend you *not* do is spend money on the Linksys BEFVP41, the allegedly Cisco VPN compatible router. I want to use kernel 2.6 on an SMP machine and thought it would be worth spending the money for a hardware solution since the software client says that it doesn't support SMP or kernel 2.6.

Well, the Linksys is crap, it looses its connection and needs to be reset twice a day and, despite it saying "VPN Router" on the box, didn't come with any instructions on how to use it with Cisco's VPN (and Cisco now owns LinkSys, they even have their logo on the box.) In fact it doesn't mention VPN setup anywhere. The HTML based UI is agonizingly slow and the VPN parameters don't match Cisco's software based VPN configuration. Total waste of money.
