Or assign the user standard no dot login and let the mta handle dot
name aliases for those users.  ie alias john.doe -> jdoe and all mail
sent to john.doe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx goes to user named jdoe.

Search google, there are many instructions on setting up dot name
aliases.
