Yes, it crashes from terminal, too, giving him a Signal 11, with crash
handler coming up. It starts, I see it open and then it immediately
crashes.

30GB. :)

> Is there a stale lock file in ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/ ?

No. Kmail directory doesn't exist under apps:
[root@localhost apps]# ls -all
total 24
drwx------ 6 root root 4096 May 3 20:51 .
drwx------ 8 root root 4096 Apr 27 21:01 ..
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 Apr 27 21:16 kfile
drwx------ 3 root root 4096 Apr 27 21:01 kfm
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 Apr 27 21:13 konqueror
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 May 3 20:51 RecentDocuments

When I start Kmail from terminal, here's the output:

First time:
[rory@localhost rory]$ *** KMail got signal 11 (Crashing)
KCrash: Application 'kmail' crashing...

Backtrack: unable to create a valid backtrace

Second time I ran from root. It crashed, saying there was a conflict
with artssound, which it then prompted me to disable when I ran it
again. So, I can get it to open via root now, but not from the panel or
from terminal when I'm not signed in as root - it crashes with signal
11.

Here's the output via root:

[root@localhost apps]# kmail
