Just out of curiosity, I went to "freshmeat.net" and typed in "diary", and there seem to be several applications there designed to help you keep track of a diary. Most of them look to handle encryption as well. Of course as Jay said, there's nothing wrong with keeping a plaintext or unencrypted diary (you could even use something like OpenOffice), so long as the file permissions are set correctly.
