P.S.: in my old linux pc there was no Linux compatible modem so I have never configured a modem in Linux before, so go easy on me ;)

The network connections interface doesn't address the Alcatel modem. It [the modem] has some quirks that make this tricky. Some guys at sf have created a shell script config utility http://sourceforge.net/projects/speedtouchconf/ you might want to try this (I haven't, so can't comment).

I followed the howto included in the sf driver package. It really is a very good how-to and will explain everything you need to know. Do read it. I followed it and my modem works a treat. The how-to also has a mailing list link if you still run into difficulties.
