up2date with compiled versions of latest kernel

Was wondering something. I updated by newly installed fedora 1 including the provided kernel(s), and then when I ran up2date I was told everthing was up2date and there was nothing more to do. That is what I wanted to see.

Then, I decided to recompile the latest kernel to add some of the features I wanted to use and after that was done, the running of up2date told me that I should be running the RPM version of the kernel as that was the better way of doing things.

How does one do that and still add the needed features to the kernel that are not already there??

Anyone please?
