Check your video card resolution settings. I have an ATI AGP M4 in the Laptop that I am using right now that wasn't being detected properly by the set up. X would fire off, bring up a blank screen for a few seconds, and then drop back to the command line and die. I edited the the config for the correct card settings and life was good...
