There you write uname -a showed you kernel .2174!? Either this was incorrect or the reboot with .2179 was not the case. > I then edited XF86Config, commenting out the load dri line and making > sure the driver was nvidia rather than nv. > > I then exited as root, and logged in as me. But you want to have the module for kernel .2179. > X does start up, but not with capability to run any GL-related packages > (such as glxgears). You build the NVidia kernel module running kernel .2174! How should the module build for the newer kernel .2179? Is that hard to understand? Ok, short description for you: 1) boot with kernel .2179 into runlevel 3 by entering "a" at grub boot screen and then adding "3" 2) be sure to have the kernel source for kernel .2179 installed 3) run the 2 CC="gcc32" sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run command steps you know 4) see how the nvidia.o module found his way into the modules directory for kernel .2179 by running "find /lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2179.nptl/ -name nvidia.o" 5) change runlevel to 5 using "init 5" Ready.
