1. It appears in the hardware browser as sda and sda1 - sda1 appears to have the right amount of space available (says fat16). However, I can't mount it or otherwise figure out how to use it. This is up to date FC1 on a new Dell 600SC. If I plug it in while sitting at the console screen, I get a message about generic USB storage and the device not being claimed by any driver. My online research hasn't turned up anything with positive results. I've tried modprobe usb-storage and mounting to no avail.
When you did: mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/floppy
It didn't work? Pasting a bit of the /var/log/messages that are relevant will be helpful, also, what kernel are you using?
The first time I tried to mount a USB stick on FC1 it was detected as /dev/sda1 but would only mount on /dev/sdb1
The /var/log/messages showed /dev/sda was being detected but would not work. In the log file there was a reference to sdb that I tried and it worked.
Here is what showed up in the log file.

At a later time it was reversed and I had to mount the stick using sda
This has occured on two different FC1 installs.
Note, the problem changed in regards to device detected depending on pluggin in our digital camera. This is one area where USB needs work.
I found this by running (as root) tail -f /var/log/messages when I plugged in the memory stick.
Hope this helps. -- Robin Laing
