Enabling a soundsystem globally would be possible in Gnome or KDE, but this would not help you with apps like xmms. And if you add this to xmms you would create a whole new set of dependencies: Xmms would depend on Gnome then (gnome-control-center), so I think this is not a solution... Christoph
