Try again:

Fedora Core - "The distribution: the package set that is included on the
set of ISO images..."

Fedora Extras - "Fedora Extras are sets of packages that augment Fedora
Core but do not replace Fedora Core component packages."

Fedora Extras is a separate repository that an individual can choose to
install... just like Fedora.us is now.  I would guess that the "merge" is
more a case of separating "extras" from "alternatives".
