well, if you have broadband, you're going to be a-ok.

yum install [package]
yum search [keyword]

by default, yum's configuration pionts you at redhat's repository, which is SLOW. edit /etc/yum.conf and change it to look like this:

-------

[duncan@atom art]$ cat /etc/yum.conf
[main]
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
debuglevel=2
logfile=/var/log/yum.log
pkgpolicy=newest
distroverpkg=fedora-release
tolerant=1
exactarch=1

[base]
name=Fedora Core 1 Base :: [http://mirror.phy.bnl.gov]
baseurl=http://mirror.phy.bnl.gov/fedora-core/1/i386/os

[updates-released]
name=Fedora Core 1 Updates :: [http://mirror.phy.bnl.gov]
baseurl=http://mirror.phy.bnl.gov/fedora-core/updates/1/i386

[fedora-extra]
name=Fedora Core 1 Extras :: [http://www.fedora.us]
baseurl=http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora.us/fedora/fedora/1/i386/yum/stable
[duncan@atom art]$

----

now, to make life even easier: after you do this, run

yum install apt synaptic

this will install apt and synaptic, once that's done, run

apt-get update

this will present you with options to pick mirrors for various packages (including LOTS that aren't on the official fedora cds)

now, when you want to install packages, it's all in a gui (with synaptic)... go: menu -> system tools -> more system tools -> synaptic

-d
