I don't use Firewire so no help there.  For SCSI:

0. Login as root.
1. Open a console window if in X session.
2. Type "fdisk -l"
3. If you see drives listed such as /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdc Then
	man fdisk
	man mke2fs
	man mount
	see /etc/fstab
else
	You have a hardware problem.
