Yes, lots of people have tried. There is no real benefit in most cases.

Most packages are compiled with instructions that a 386 could understand, but they are *optimized* for a 686. So while you could get an improvemente by rebuilding all packages, it's likely to be small.

Note that the kernel, glibc, and other packages *are* provided in 686 versions since for those packages it does make a big difference.
