Ok, at the grub prompt, hit e to enter edit mode, then at the end of the line add "nofirewire s" (I'm not sure if the nofirewire is required in this context, but it won't hurt). Then, hit enter and b to boot. It should kick you to a command prompt, at which point, you want to type: chkconfig --level 5 kudzu off chkconfig --level 3 kudzu off reboot This will turn Kudzu off for both runlevels 5 and 3 (X and Terminal). You will still want to add the nofirewire option to the /etc/grub.conf, so you don't have to enter it every time though.
