Dual-head on ATI Mobility (Acer laptop)

Hiya,

On a fresh Fedora (Yarrow) install on an Acer TravelMate 735 everything was sweet and working.

Under the GUI ‘Display’ was dual-head – ability to display different image on the laptop LCD and external VGA port.

Once this ‘Dual Head’ option was enabled the X-server now fails to start with

‘(EE) ATI: XF86Config Device sections “Videocard0” and “Videocard1” may not be assigned to the same adaptor”

XF86Config lists

Section “Device”

            Identifier            “Videocard0”

            Driver                ati

            VendorName     Videocard vendor”

            BoardName       “ATI Rage Mobility”

EndSection

Repeated again for ‘Videocard1’ with an additional parameter of

            BusID               “PCI:1:1:0

Quick check of /proc/pci indicates that there’s only the one BusID available.

I’ve tried adding BusID to both device sections and ‘Screen 1’ to the latter device, in an attempt to convince the ATI driver I really do want to refer to the same adaptor.

Any suggestions?

From a user perspective, pity a single checkbox broke things in an unfriendly way (I can put things back but not so for many point’n’click users)

Regards,

Chr!s

PS: Lots of similar postings, however most are regarding two display adaptors. This woks fine in WinXP, 98 etc

PPS: Actualy only one glitch – mic is enabled by default – which is fine, but mic output is (unfortunately) also enabled making for excellent feedback on a laptop.
