Does anyone have a potential solution or a starting place for resolution?
I have appended the output generated when trying to run up2date. Please
help, I'm stuck.

Fetching package list for channel: fedora-core-1...

Fetching
http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/core/1/i386/os//headers/header.info...

[snip]

 File "/usr/lib/python2.2/gzip.py", line 110, in _read_gzip_header
raise IOError, 'Not a gzipped file'

[snip]

I know in the not too distant past that mirrors.kernel.org was having
issues syncing. There is a bug similar to yours that is also trying that
mirror:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=118596

I would suggest giving another mirror a try and see if that clears it up.

Thanks to all who responded. Changing to another mirror fixed the problem.
