If I recall correctly, the shell file / gcj issue was a RedHat 9 feature to make gcj appear to act like Sun's Java. This does not appear to be an issue with Fedora Core 1. At any rate, I wrote up a detailed HOWTO concerning one way to install Java on Fedora Core 1 and sent it to the person requesting help. The method works for me, and I'm happy with the resulting system runs. /mde/
