That did the trick. I take it there is a known issue with USB and the SMP kernel, does somebody have a link to details of this?
BTW - I tried upgrading to the 2.6 kernel last night - that seemed to fix the issue as well, but we're not quite ready for 2.6 in other areas so I'm very glad to have a solution with the 2.4 kernel.

Try commenting out the "alias usb-controller usb-ohci" in
/etc/modules.conf and reboot.
