Yes!  This has speed things up immensely! It is now down to less than a
second per email, much more acceptable.  I also tried the spamc route,
and although it was a bit faster (about 7 seconds an email), the -L flag
for spamassassin seems to be the best solution.  Thanks for the help and
all the replies!
