If this happens again, you can try to restart nautilus.
$ killall -9 nautilus
after this, Gnome starts nautilus again. If the X-Server/Gnome crashed, you can "strg + alt + backspace" to kill the X-Server and logon again.
I agree with the "after reboot all is fine" sentiment. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll save it in case the problem happens again.
