Michele,

 Look at modules.conf. Its a file that has a list of modules
corresponding to the hardware your system possesses. I suggest  you do
the following. 

 Before compiling the kernel go to the old kernel and check the modules
loaded towards enabling the sound card to work. Once you have the same
deduced please ensure you have them compiled statically/dynamically and
reboot into the new kernel.
