Certainly a hardware problem, maybe bad RAM. You may consider running a tool like memtest86 (see fedora.us for an FC1 RPM).

My installations are rock solid, both as workstation as well as a
server.

I use 512MB DDR RAM, 105 euro, is that possible in a laptop ueberhaup?
