I have a HSP56 MR modem and I had problems to compile the driver.
I got pctel-0.9.7-9.tar.gz file and followed the intructions in readme file. I'm not sure what is to have the "lspci in a standard path ".

you can go tp http://www.linmodems.com and they have a mailing list where many people will be able to help.
Unfortunaltely I do not use a modem right now so I have notencountered those problems (yet).
