.phtml as suffix sounds like very old PHP code. .phtl as suffix was used
for for PHP older than version 3. Is Wikipedia code this old?

Running PHP with "register_globals on" is a security risk. In
conjunction with old PHP code I fear it will easily lead to cross site
scripting and other bad things.

To have Apache known that .phtml is PHP code you must add a handler and
modify the "AddType" line for in PHP in httpd.conf.
