My little NG box has a configuration field that lets me specify the nameserver my ISP gave me. This nameserver or it's own address is the nameserver handed to DCHCP clients. My little NG box will act like a nameserver but it only works if you give it that address of a working name server that it can query. You can also elect to set a fixed IP address outside of the DHCP range. My NG box serves DHCP on the first 30 some addresses so something like 192.168.0.50 is outside of this range. With a fixed address DHCP is out of the loop and /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf (nameserver list from ISP) let you assign local names and addresses behind your NG NAT. The default local side IP address of my NGbox is 192.168.0.1, and is the default gateway. ALL 192.168.0.NNN addresses and names behind your NAT will need to be in the host file if you use fixed addresses. When things are working setup a caching name server for a quicker more responsive feel. So first set the nameserver in the NGbox. -- T o m M i t c h e l l mitch48-at-sbcglobal-dot-net
