Hi.

I put into practice the article UPS for Linux by Thomas Chung and
installed Bulldog UPS from Belkin for my F6C320-SER UPS.

I am still wondering at the result, It does not look right.
The PC does not have a modem and the UPS is plugged into the
Serial Port. I built a Null Modem serial cable to connect
the UPS to the serial port.

If I select /dev/ttyS0, the Utility Power Status and the Battery
Status say "Unknown"

If I select /dev/ttyS1 to /dev/ttyS3, then the Utility Power Status
and the Battery Status say "Normal".

I know this is not normal but I wonder what am I missing?
Should I uncross the wires on the serial cable?

I tested the cable of my APC UPS on my other computer
and they are straight-thru.

I think maybe I have not setup the serial port properly, How can I test
for it?

If I do stty -F /dev/ttyS0, I get
speed 9600 baud ; line=0;
-brkint -imaxbel

If I repeat it for /dev/ttyS1, I get stty: /dev/ttyS1: Input/Output Error

(how do I setup minicom to capture /dev/ttyS0? I read the
manual but it assumes I am using a modem and AT commands.)

In any case, if I disconnect the power cord, I do not get any shutdown notice.

Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

Are you using the Belkin driver for Linux ? It says it is for Redhat 5.2 or something but seems to run OK on FC1.
http://web.belkin.com/support/download/download.asp?download=F6C320-SER-LC&lang=1&mode=
http://www.belkin.com/support/compatlists/UPS.html
Now it doesn't seem to list a Linux driver for your particular UPS but I'd have a go with the Linux one as it appears to be common for several serial Belkin's. Other than that (and maybe as a better choice) you could take a look at NUT at http://www.networkupstools.org/ The driver there for the Belkin UPS seems to work OK too with FC1. Check out http://quasar.mathstat.uottawa.ca/~selinger/ups/ for a system V start/stop program for Belkin-supplied driver and details about the NUT serial driver for the Belkin UPS's.

I just use the serial cable that came with the UPS and it works fine. Are you using a serial port connector that is directly on the MB of your computer or one of those ones that connect with a little cable? I there there are a couple of versions of the wiring for the cable type (I had to rewire mine).

In retrospect, Belkin would not be my first choice for a UPS under Linux. MDG seems to have good Linux support.
