You could try vsound: http://www.zorg.org/vsound/ - that should work
with anything that uses your soundcard. 

If you want something that will work from a text console as well, get
hold of trplayer: http://www.linux-speakup.org/trplayer.html 

This isn't 100% robust - if you get network problems things will die
early (which isn't so different to the real realplayer...)
