Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I bought an inexpensive Canon CanoScan LIDE 30 USB scanner. Plugged it to my Fedora Core 1 box, fired up XSANE, and it worked. No config hacking, prayers, or curses needed! :)

Thank goodness for SANE developers! Pun intended. :)
