Try putting Option "UseBIOS" "off" in the device section of your
/etc/X11/XF86Config
Like this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "savage"
VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "S3 ProSavage KM133"
Option "UseBIOS" "off"
EndSection
We have a couple of Shuttle SK41G with an S3 Savage KM133 video and
this did the trick for me.
Before I did this any time X started (except for 640X480) I'd get a
signal from the video card out of the range of any of my monitors.
I found this trick somewhere in a posting in the goggle Usenet
archives.

Anybody can be an old conservative. It
takes a lot of real work to be an old liberal.
