Folks, this is *really* beginning to annoy me. I like to use the web-based http://localhost:631 (CUPS and gimp-print-cups) to configure the ten different printers I have access to at my workplace. This takes me a long time (I guess an hour and a half to setup and test) and I have things like locations, descriptions that work with zsh's lpr -P[TAB] expansion, and I do NOT use foomatic. But, what do I see today as I do an up2date, the new redhat-config-printer has decimated my printer setup. Now *every single* Location: tag I entered is gone. Just gone. My local printer is now foomatic, which I don't want, and a Color LaserJet I use is suddenly off a custom PPD I created for correct transparencies and business cards. So, I want to know, if I remove redhat-config-printer and its dependencies (the -gui and desktop-printing, I think), will printing suddenly just die? If it's safe, I'll do it, but I need printing. If I can't do that, then what files and directories must I save to restore my printer definitions back after each update? I thought it was just the /etc/cups directory, but that's not it. I now realize printcap is rewritten by the upgrade as well. Are there others I should save like spool directories or bits of /var? Please help me, I get tired of this redo every time and would love to just tar up a set a files so I can undo the damage from updates. Matt -- I am a theoretical chemist. Fear me!
