what's what in official yum repositories?

I'm working on setting up a local Fedora yum mirror. Eventually I figured
out that I needed to be rsync fedora.us instead of fedora (oopsie). Is
there an explanation somewhere of why these two things are seperate?
Also, now I'm presented with a slew of different parts of the repository:

 RPMS.k12ltsp/ 20-Jul-2003 14:33 -
 RPMS.os/ 06-Nov-2003 01:07 -
 RPMS.stable/ 11-Feb-2004 23:32 -
 RPMS.testing/ 11-Feb-2004 13:04 -
 RPMS.unstable/ 06-Feb-2004 14:21 -
 RPMS.updates-testing/ 12-Feb-2004 02:20 -
 RPMS.updates/ 12-Feb-2004 02:17 -

os, k12ltsp, updates and updates-testing make sense, but what are stable,
unstable, and testing for?

No, no, you're not thinking, you're just being logical.
