Edit ~/.vnc/xstartup

comment (#) out these lines like this:

#xsetroot -solid grey
#vncconfig -iconic &
#xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
#twm &

and add a line like this:

gnome-session &

OR

startkde &

Restart vncserver, and you should be able to use gnome/kde.
