Problems with USB key (tip #40 on fedoranews.org)

Hi,

I am trying to get my USB key working, following tip #40 on
fedoranews.org, which suggest doing the following:

1. as root (or through "$su -l" from a user account) with Vim, Gedit or
any other text-editor add a line to your /etc/fstab file

/dev/sda1 /mnt/usbkey vfat
user,iocharset=utf8,umask=0,sync,quiet,exec,codepage=866,noauto 0 0

2. as root (or through "$su -l" from a user account) create a directory in
/mnt/ file

#mkdir /mnt/usbkey

After doing what is suggested here and trying to mount the key, the following happens:

After plugging the key in I see (in /var/log/messages):

Feb 11 11:06:58 gericke kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:1d.7-1, assigned address 2
Feb 11 11:06:58 gericke kernel: usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x781/0x7101) is not claimed by any active driver.
Feb 11 11:07:01 gericke /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: Setup usb-storage for USB product 781/7101/102
Feb 11 11:07:01 gericke kernel: Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...

Feb 11 11:07:01 gericke kernel:  sda: sda1
Feb 11 11:07:01 gericke kernel: USB Mass Storage support registered.

So I think everything is fine there.

Now, if I try to mount the key nothing happens and after a while I see the
following:

Feb 11 11:07:17 gericke kernel: MSDOS FS: IO charset utf8
Feb 11 11:07:17 gericke kernel: MSDOS FS: Using codepage 866
Feb 11 11:08:32 gericke kernel: usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout

Feb 11 11:08:38 gericke kernel: usb-storage: host_reset() requested but not implemented
Feb 11 11:08:48 gericke kernel: scsi: device set offline - command error recover failed: host 1 channel 0 id 0 lun 0

Feb 11 11:08:48 gericke kernel:  I/O error: dev 08:01, sector 0
Feb 11 11:08:48 gericke kernel: FAT: unable to read boot sector
Feb 11 11:08:48 gericke kernel: FAT: freeing iocharset=utf8
Feb 11 11:08:48 gericke devlabel: devlabel service started/restarted

After that a Gnome window comes up telling me that it was unable to mount
the key.

I think the important message here may be:
Feb 11 11:08:38 gericke kernel: usb-storage: host_reset() requested but not implemented

The thing is, if I have the key plugged in when I boot the computer
everything works fine; mounting, un-mounting, plugging in an out, etc..

The same problem pops up in RedHat 9 but on RedHat 8 it works without
problems...

Does anyone know what is happening here?

Thanks,

Michael
