You need to install the rhgb package and to set as kernel parameter in
either grub.conf or lilo.conf rhgb. I.e. in grub.conf the kernel line
looks like:

kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.22-1.2149.nptl ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb
