You could always get back a default configuration file which is part of
an RPM following:

1) find out to which package the file belongs with i.e.
rpm -qf /etc/yum.conf -> yum-2.0.5.-1
2) extract the desired file
rpm2cpio yum-2.0.5.-1.i386.rpm | cpio -ivd /etc/yum.conf
you may use "mc" too for extracting

This is valid not only for yum.
