I found the problem, or should I say, a previous writer pointed me to the right place. when I started my vncserver :1 -geometry and so on, created the session under root, so when I tried to vncviewer, I had to use I think the -u parameter, to log on under root. I checked the permissions on vncviewer, Everyone > has execute turned on If by 'the logon prompt' you mean the VNC dialog box asking you for a password, I expect that you typed in the wrong password.
