I'm still running Mozilla 1.4.1, but all I usually have to do to get Java working is install the following packages that I found somewhere:

j2re-1.4.2-5.rh90.dag.i586.rpm
mozilla-j2re-1.4.2-5.rh90.dag.i586.rpm

Hope this helps.

I'm having some problems getting Java to work in Mozilla (1.6). I've
downloaded the newest JRE from Sun and I've tried creating a symbolic
link from the download folder into the Mozilla folder. The Java 2
Plug-in for Linux (.xpi file) was "installed successfully" as well but
still no positive results. Any additional advice/resources would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Put a symbolic link to your java location such as ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_03/pugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so in your mozilla 1.6 plugin directory.

If you put the symbolic link in your /usr/lib/mozilla directory (instead of the current version one) you won't loose it each time you update Mozilla. :)
