It had to do with a setting in Mozilla Mail. Right click on an email account and go to properties. Then, after the mail and news account(s) listed on the left is an entry for Outgoing Server (SMTP). Click on that and untick the box for "Use name and password" and our problem goes away. Apparently having that ticked didn't cause any problems previously but now it does. -- Henry
