Why should I register my nick? To register channels, or to be added securely
to channel access lists, you must first register your nick. Being registered
lets you keep using the same nick, so that people can become more familiar
with you and know you by your reputation. Finally, IRC client software which
supports CAPAB IDENTIFY-MSG will actually let people see whether you've
identified to services when you send them messages or when you comment on
channel, thus helping them to determine when someone might be spoofing your
identity.

For more information, type the IRC command: /msg nickserv help register
