If you can list directories but not read files, it could be that the burn
wasn't entirely completed and failed.

Or just that the media isn't very good. For example, of a dozen DVDs I
record half a year ago, a few are only readable in the recorder, and fail
with errors in most dvd readers.

Have your friend record another copy, at reduced speed if possible, and
try again.
